Read The Beast Player
Immediately after publishing my "best books of 2018" post, I read The Beast Player, by Nahoko Uehashi, and absolutely adored it, from the first page. It was recommended to me in Browsers, in Woodbridge.
Apparently it is also an anime series (not currently available in the UK) and there are a few more books (not yet translated into English).
